ENGLISH PH.D TO BE AWARDED POSTHUMOUSLY
 
Event: English Degree to be Awarded Posthumously during Grad School Ceremony

Information:
The English Department mourns and remembers Shelley Martin, a Ph.D. candidate who was killed in a car accident on the night of Thursday, May 3. She was on I-10, returning home to Lafayette with her Canadian friend Coleen Brown, when her car was rear-ended by another car. Shelley Martin was a Ph.D. Fellow in English from 2003-2006. She was a teaching assistant in 2006-2007. She had just completed the requirements to be awarded her Ph.D. at Spring 2007 commencement. The degree will be awarded posthumously at the Graduate School Commencement exercises at 5:30 pm, on May 19. Her mother, Michele Martin of Abbotsford, BC, Canada, and her father and step-mother, Terry and Sylvia Martin of Victoria, BC, Canada, are in Lafayette to accept Shelley's Ph.D. diploma from UL Lafayette. Her doctoral hood will be presented to her parents by her dissertation director, Dr. Mary Ann Wilson. Twelve of Shelley's Martin's relatives from Canada will be attending the commencement exercises.
