LUS Water Tower Near Cajun Field Features University Logos

A Lafayette Utilities System water tower near the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Athletics Complex got more than a fresh coat of paint as part of a routine maintenance job.

The 45-year-old LUS tower along Bertrand Drive was due for repainting to cover patches of rust and faded, peeling paint. The job is done every 10-15 years, but this facelift included UL Lafayette logos, which were painted on two sides of the tower.

“This is another extremely visible way to represent our university and our brand, and the partnership between LUS and the university is just another example of how the community and the university have worked together,” said Matt Tarver, UL Lafayette’s branding manager.

As part of an agreement approved by the Lafayette City-Parish Council, LUS and Lafayette Consolidated Government covered the $20,000 cost of the paint job and light installation. The University is extending $100,000 in sponsorships over the 10-year period the logos will be displayed. The $100,000 amount was calculated in comparison to how much billboard space would have cost, according to LUS Director Terry Huval.

Since the water tower needed to be repainted anyway, the cross promotion was ideal for both the university and LUS, Huval added.

Although the deal was finalized in May, the work, which required that the water system be offline, wasn’t started immediately because water usage is higher in hotter months, peaking in the summer.

Established in 1896, LUS serves more than 51,000 customers with water service, according to information posted on its website. LUS also provides wastewater, electrical and fiber telecommunications services.
