|Hilliard University Art Museum Names Interim Director
Lance Harris is the newly appointed interim museum director for the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Harris’ one-year appointment begins Feb. 3.
“Lance will maintain our forward momentum and advance important initiatives, such as the foundation of the Hilliard Society, the acquisition of major works of art, and museum accreditation,” said Dr. Carolyn Bruder, UL Lafayette’s interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.
Harris replaces Mark Tullos, who served as museum director for 10 years. Tullos recently accepted a position with the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism as assistant secretary/director of the Louisiana State Museum.
“Mark Tullos has been a steady, calm, knowledgeable leader for our museum, and we are most grateful for his guidance and leadership,” Bruder said.
As the Hilliard University Art Museum’s director, Harris will oversee a range of exhibits, programs and tours. The museum houses a collection of 18th- through 21st-century European, Asian and American art.
In addition to the permanent collection, the museum’s 11,000 square feet of gallery space also features changing exhibitions of regional, national and international art.
The “John Buck: C’est Magnifique” exhibit, which opened Jan. 19 and runs through May 1, showcases the work of the internationally renowned sculptor, woodcarver and printmaker.
Harris also will coordinate several key initiatives that include: completing the accreditation process with the American Alliance of Museums; launching the museum’s new fundraising group, the Hilliard Society; expanding cooperative programming with University students and faculty; strengthening programs and educational opportunities for area K-12 students; and building relationships with museum supporters, donors and volunteers.
Before joining UL Lafayette, Harris was director of curatorial services/museum division director for 17 museums under the purview of the Louisiana Department of State. Prior to that, he was registrar and collections manager for the Louisiana Art and Science Museum in Baton Rouge.
Harris holds a dual master of arts degree in history and anthropology from the University of Southern Mississippi. He also earned a bachelor of arts degree in the same disciplines from the school.
He received the Newcomers Museum Award given by the Louisiana Association of Museums in 2008.
