Savoie Begins Second Year on Accreditation Council

Dr. Joseph Savoie, president of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, has been re-elected to represent Louisiana on the executive council of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is the regional body for the accreditation of higher education institutions in 11 southern states.

The SACS Commission on Colleges represents institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

Dr. Savoie will be part of a 13-member council that works to set higher education standards and processes for colleges and universities, and ensure they are met.

The main responsibility of the council, which is the executive arm of the SACS Commission on Colleges board of trustees, is to interpret commission policy and procedure.

Dr. Savoie’s second, one-year term runs through Dec. 31, 2013.

The organization’s executive council is comprised of a chairperson, public member and one representative of each of the 11 states. Members are elected by the board of trustees and eligible for election to three, one-year terms.

The SACS Commission on Colleges is one of six regional accreditation organizations recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
